Reflexology For Motion Sickness/Nausea

Traveling for the holiday?
Here are a few tips to help combat motion sickness:

~Tap your forearms lightly together, just below the wrist, until the nausea subsides.

~Place a drop of lavender, peppermint, or sweet orange oil on the palm of your hands. Cup your hands over your nose and mouth and take several deep breaths to calm your tummy.
(Another option is to dilute the oil in a carrier oil, such as coconut or almond oil, and rub it your abdomen or the soles of your feet.)

~If more than one family member sufferes from motion sickness you might want to add a drop of the above oils to the air vents, allowing everyone to benefit from their theraputic properties.

 Happy travels and Merry Christmas!

Footnote: Though this post is for motion sickness, these tips can be applied to any type of nausea
(flu, morning sickness etc.)

Reflexology: Just Another Parlor Trick.

Sometimes I feel like all I do all day is parlor tricks.  Trust me, I am no magician. I'm no fortune teller.  But sometimes it feels like it.  I have been practicing Reflexology for a year now and each day I am more and more convinced of its validity.  Here are a few personal experiences:

*A woman came in seeking relief from menstrual cramps.  She gave me no healthy history.  I palpated a few sensitive reflexes and asked, "Have you been experiencing any tightness or fluttering in your chest?" Shocked, she reported that about twice a month she feels a tightness and fluttering in her chest and had planed to visit her doctor.  After locating another tender reflex I asked, "Do you have a hard time breathing deeply?  Or experience shortness of breathe?"  Again, the answer was yes.  Keep in mind, all she told me before our session was that she wanted relief from menstrual cramps.

*During a session with a male client I asked if he was experiencing any jaw or tooth pain. Rather surprised, he said yes.  His jaw had been bothering him for the last week or so.  After checking the same reflex on the opposite foot I asked "Is that side of your jaw more sensitive than the other?"  Again, his answer was yes. He had not mentioned his jaw pain as the purpose of his visit was to find relief from painful hammer toe.

*A female client had an ovarian reflex that was continuously sensitive.  Many women are sensitive on their reproductive reflexes due to their monthly cycle, so I didn't think much of it.  After 5 sessions and no significant change in sensitivity she felt something was off and went in to see her general practitioner. I got chills when she told me they found a cyst on her ovary. This client had been coming in for neck pain.

*I was working on a man seeking relief from back pain.  He was particularly sensitive on the reflex representing the lymph nodes in the groin area. When I told him what that reflex represented, he reported he was currently suffering from shingles on his groin. He had been too embarrassed to tell me about his shingles, due to their location, before our session.

*A male client came in for some basic stress relief.  Due to crystal build up on his eye/ear reflex I asked if he had any issues with his eyes or ears. He reported he was currently on antibiotics for an ear infection.

I should note that all of the above clients did find relief for the ailments they hoped to find relief from.  All (including myself) were surprised at what else was discovered over the course of their session.

I admit it.  I started out a skeptic.  I have decided to take a scientific approach to what I do, and  I am truly fascinated by every session.  I am amazed at all your feet can tell me!  Your feet can tell me your health history, your current struggles, and also provide a warning for potential complications in the future.

Sure, sometimes I want to say "Ta da!" after a session, but I can assure you, Reflexology is no parlor trick!

***Footnote: I do not diagnose, prescribe, or treat any specific condition.  A sensitive reflex does not necessarily mean there is a problem with the corresponding organ.  If you are concerned about your health, please visit your doctor.***

Heel Spurs & Reflexology

A client recently thanked me for relieving her chronic pain. She had been receiving regular shots in the foot to relieve pain caused by heel spurs. Before coming to see me she was in so much pain she went to see her podiatrist to beg for another shot.  Her podiatrist refused treatment as it was too close to her previous treatment.  Desperately wanting to find relief, she decided to give reflexology a try.  Miraculously, her pain has been relieved and she has not needed even one shot since we began our sessions 6 months ago. This is a clip of what she used to have to endure on a regular basis. Reflexology is an affordable and noninvasive option that is worth looking in to. I am so glad I could help her find some relief!

This Months Mini-Miracles

I thought it would be fun to share monthly mini-miracles. I will try to post monthly, but this first mini-miracles post is an accumulation of the summer months. Some of these experiences may seem simple, but I assure you they were very significant to my clients:

Arthritic Pain
A woman came in with arthritic pain in her finger.  Her finger was so swollen she was unable to wear her wedding ring, snap, or play certain pieces of music on the piano.  For 18 months she suffered.  She began weekly reflexology sessions.  By our 5th session she was able to wear her wedding ring, snap, and play piano pieces she hadn't been able to touch in a year and a half. She now comes in for one to two times a month (as needed) for maintenance. To read about her experience in her own words, click HERE.

Restless Leg Syndrome
A woman had been waking up every night with very uncomfortable and restless legs.  Baths and lotions were being used nightly in an effort to calm them, often at 1:00am.  Her restless nights resulted in lack of sleep and lack of energy during the day.  Understandably, this also effected her mood.  She began weekly sessions and happily reports that her restless leg hasn't acted up once!  . .  .except for that one week when I was gone on vacation. ;)

Knee Pain/Stiffness
A client excitedly reported that she was able to bend her knee as she climbed into bed!  Usually she would have to sit on the bed and, leaving her leg straight, pull her leg up onto the bed.  She was so excited she even showed me how she could bend her leg behind her and sit on it on the couch!

Weight Loss/Constipation
A woman had been having digestive issues and struggling with constipation since childhood.  Her only relief had been found in taking milk of magnesia each night before going to bed.  After her first reflexology session she lost an amazing 3 lbs as her digestive tract was finally able to flush itself of all that waste!  This was a very pleasant surprise seeing as how the reason for her visit was to relieve shoulder pain.  Her shoulder pain was also relieved through our session.

Ovarian Cyst
During our session a client experienced severe pain on her ovarian reflex. This boggled us both as she was unaware of any ovarian problems. I thought it might possibly mean she was ovulating, as many women are more sensitive on that reflex during ovulation. Two days after our session she went to the ER and discovered she had ovarian cysts.

Sometimes a symptom manifests itself in the foot before it is noticed in the corresponding body part. Please keep in mind that a tender reflex does not always indicate a serious problem. It is always a good idea to be aware of your body and seek medical attention if you feel it is necessary. Often times clearing the congestion on the nerve pathway can avoid a complication completely.

 Sleep
A client happily reported that she was able to sleep through the entire night without the use of a sleep aid for the first time in she couldn't remember how long.  As I tell all my clients, the most common side effect of reflexology is the most restful nights sleep of your life.

Mystery Rash
A client had a very sensitive neck reflex on her right foot during our session.  I asked her if her neck or throat had been bothering her or if she carried her tension in her neck.  She said no and we continued our session.  Her next visit was a few weeks later.  When she came in her neck reflex was even more sensitive.  I asked, again, if her neck was giving her any problems.   Again, she said no.  However, when I told her that her lymph reflexes were also congested her memory was sparked and she reported that a few days after our first session she went into the doctor for a strange and very uncomfortable rash on the right side of her neck. She was given antibiotics for the rash.   During our second session the rash had diminished to what appeared to be a few scabbed-over bug bites.  What was really fascinating was that the neck reflexes on her left foot were sensitive as well, but only on the right side (the side of her neck that had the rash).

A Skeptic With an Ear Infection
Often times a skeptic comes in; someone who is seeking relief from an ailment but has a healthy dose of skepticism coming into the session.  These clients tend to leave out certain items on their healthy history.  The don't want to tell me what's wrong with them, they want me to tell them.  I don't mind when this happens.  In fact, I rather enjoy it.  More often than not, I find a congested reflex and discover that, yes, they do have a problem with that body part! My most recent skeptic was surprised when I asked if his ears had been bothering him.  He had gone to the doctors the day before our session with an ear infection and was currently on antibiotics.

Menstruation
A client had a very sensitive uterine reflex. At the completion of our session she stood to realize she had started her period.  She stated that even though she couldn't say she didn't expect her period (she knew it would start that week) she didn't expect it right then!  Reflexology is amazing at stimulating normal body functions.    On a side note, reflexology can also regulate menstruation as well as  drastically reduce menstrual symptoms.

Painful & Tired Feet
A client with an occupation demanding her to be on her feet for an entire shift came in hoping to find some relief.  After work her feet were tingling and painful.  It was all she could do to kick off her shoes and get into bed.  This occurred every night she worked and would require a few days to fully recover.  She found relief after her first session and happily reported that her feet felt great at work that night and the feeling stayed with her for 72 hours after her shift ended!

Is Reflexology Safe for Pregnant Women?

Is reflexology safe for pregnant women? There are many differing ideas on this subject, even amongst reflexologists. This article details my personal opinion.

My short answer to the question would be YES!  So many pregnancy ailments can be relieved through reflexology!  Sciatic pain, back & joint pain, edema, mood swings, constipation, nausea and countless other problems.  However, when deciding if reflexology is right for you personally, there are several things to consider.

*Are you in your first trimester?  Many Reflexologists choose not to work on a woman in her first trimester, though there is no proof of reflexology causing a miscarriage.  I feel denying a mother treatment does her a disservice as there are so many symptoms of pregnancy (listed above) that could be improved through reflexology!

*Do you have a history of miscarriage? If there is a history of miscarriage, it is wise to wait until you are well into your second trimester before beginning sessions.  That being said, reflexology is much like exercise.  You would not start an intense exercise regimen as soon as you found out you were pregnant, but if you had already been working out regularly, your doctor is more likely to allow you to continue to do so.  This is also true of reflexology.  A woman may be trying to improve her fertility by coming in for regular sessions.   If that is the case, the mother would be fine to continue treatments throughout the length of her pregnancy. (To learn how reflexology can improve fertility, click HERE.)

*Will reflexology stimulate contractions and lead to labor?  I would say yes and no.  Reflexology improves all body functions and helps the body to do what it is already preparing to do.  If your body is already prepared for delivery, labor may be triggered immediately during a session.  If your body or your baby are not quite ready, you may experience some preparatory contractions, but you will not go into labor until both of you are ready.  That being said, if the baby is in distress and your body is preparing for an early delivery, reflexology could possibly initiate that early labor.  If this is a concern for you, ask your reflexologist to avoid working all hormone related and reproductive reflexes.

*Will reflexology ease delivery?  Yes!  Not only can the ailments listed above improve, but sleep quality will improve (more energy to push) and the body (read: hips) can better relax, allowing easier passage for the baby.

One mother went into labor 48 hours after her reflexology session.  Though the mother came in hoping for a more immediate response, her Doula, who had also attended her first birth, was certain her delivery for her second child went considerably smoother because of reflexology. Her body needed those 48 hours to prepare.

Another client delivered just 12 hours after her session.  Both she and her baby were ready to go!

What about post-natal care? Reflexology is a fantastic option for treating the "baby blues", improving milk supply, balancing hormones, and stimulating the uterus to contract back to it's pre-baby size all without the use of drugs.  You may want to ask your reflexologist if they treat infants.  An infant session usually lasts 5 minutes or less as their feet are so small and their tiny reflex points can be easily manipulated.  Reflexology can help your infant with gas, colic, and whatever else might be making it hard for the two of you to rest at night.

I can bundle an infant session onto a mothers session for no additional charge. Some mothers have more success nursing their child during a session as they tend to be more relaxed, allowing the milk to flow more freely. To read how reflexology can improve milk production, click HERE.

Foot Note: Please make sure you see a trained reflexologist when pregnant.  Though reflexology is a very safe option, reflex points can become overstimulated by untrained hands and lead to complications.

Unexpected Reactions to Reflexology

My clients have reported many benefits resulting from reflexology including a decrease in headaches/migraines, reduced PMS symptoms, the elimination of restless leg syndrome, and reduced pain and inflammation associated with arthritis, just to name a few.  Of course, each of these clients came in hoping to find relief from these specific ailments. But are there other pleasant side effects? Of course!

During a private session I treat the whole person, not just the one or two symptoms currently being manifested.  As a result, my clients often experience multiple benefits.

Here are a few of the unexpected benefits reported by my clients:

*Best nights sleep of their lives, resulting in more energy throughout the day.  "I slept through the night without any (sleeping) medication for the first time in I don't know how long!"
*Increased awareness of all body parts. "I feel so alive!"
*Improved posture.   "I know this sounds strange, but I feel more aware of my posture.  I feel taller!"
*Triggering of normal body functions. (Regulation of menstrual cycle, increased libido, increased focus etc.)
*More vivid dreams.
*Reduction of stress and tension.  One client said he didn't realize how tense he was until after our session when he was finally relaxed!
*Improved bowel and bladder function.  It is not uncommon for a client to ask to use the restroom after a session.
*More positive attitude and outlook on life.
*Overall sense of well being.
*Weight loss.  One client lost 3 lbs the week following her first session as her body flushed itself of toxins. Wow!

Reflexology for Weight Loss and Cholesterol Management

Is diet and exercise just not enough when it comes to cholesterol and weight management?  Maybe you should consider adding clinical reflexology to your routine.

One of my clients lost 3 pounds the week following her session.  3 POUNDS! As toxins build up in our body we store them as fat or as waste in the bowels.  As the bowels are stimulated throughout a clinical reflexology session, they are better able to function properly and aid in the removal of harmful toxins.

Doctors Shou-qing, Xian-qing, Yuna-zhong, and Wan-yan, conducted a study of 72 cases of hyperlipemia (excessive lipids/fat) with a treated group of 41 and a control group of 31. Before and after the treatment session, 4 ml of "empty stomach blood" was collected. One group received a series of reflexo-therapy sessions of more strength (clinical reflexology) and lasting 30 to 40 minutes. The control group received a lighter strength 20 minute session (spa reflexology). The reflexo-therapy group showed an improvement of symptoms of 78% as opposed to 32% for the second group. The treatment group showed a reduction in cholesterol and monoglyceride with a marked statistical difference.

Arthritis Testimonial

"I had been dealing with arthritis pain in my left middle finger for over a year and half.  The base of my finger was so swollen and painful, I couldn't wear my wedding ring (even though it was on the next finger over).  As a piano teacher, I had been avoiding the use of my middle finger to the extremes.  I stopped playing certain pieces of music and couldn't snap my fingers with my left hand.  I had been doing everything in my power to avoid taking prescription medications.  I didn't think reflexology was going to do the trick.  To be honest, I was skeptical that anything done to my feet would have an effect on my hands.  I was pleasantly surprised.  After my first reflexology session I had a visible reduction in swelling, allowing me to wear my wedding ring, and the pain was manageable without medication.  After the second session, I could snap my fingers for the first time since showing symptoms.  Now, after 5 sessions, I can play pieces of music I haven't touched in ages.  I have truly seen better results than I had imagined!  I am able to manage my pain without the side effects of immuno-suppressants or pain pills.  Thanks MaryAnn! Reflexology is definitely going to be a regular part of my health management program."   ~Amy, Leavenworth KS

Reflexology for Nursing Mothers/ Increased Milk Supply

God created woman with the amazing ability to feed her offspring. It's natural.  It's healthy.  We all know the benefits of breastfeeding and know that "Breast is Best" for our infant. It is not only important for proper development, but convenient and economical!   Many mothers start off with the intention of breastfeeding, but become discouraged when their milk supply simply can't keep up with their growing infant.

In this study reflexology resulted in an average 88% increase in breast milk production for nursing mothers. The individual who wrote this article experienced an incredible 300% increase! Not only that, but other ailments such as stress, anxiety, back pain and fatigue improved over the course of 10 reflexology treatments.  Amazing!

Key Reflexes:
  • Breast reflex to encourage proper mammary function
  • Pituitary, thyroid, & reproductive reflexes to stimulate proper function and aid in hormone regulation.
  • Solar plexus, neck, shoulder, and back reflexes to relieve stress and tension as well as a possible muscle pull

Reflexology for Infertilty

Studies show that over 12% of the reproductive population struggles with infertility.  Infertility is defined as being unable to get pregnant after at least 1 year of trying and also includes those who are unable to carry a pregnancy to term.  Those of you struggling with infertility are already aware of treatments available to you through your fertility specialist, so those options will not be discussed here.  What you might not be aware of, however, is that there are other options available at a fraction of the cost with no negative side effects.  One of these options is reflexology.

While researching for clients, I found a very intriguing study demonstrating miraculous results:

" Has Reflexology An Effect on Infertility? (Ericksen 1996)
To determine the effect of reflexology on infertility 108 women under 35 years with no
previous children, and that had attempted to become pregnant for more than two years
were selected from 260 applicants. Forty-seven of the 108 withdrew. The remaining 61
women were given sixteen 45-minute reflexology treatments over a 7 - 8 month period.
Treatments were given 2 times a week for 4 weeks, then 2 treatments before ovulation.
Nine women (15%) became pregnant within six months after starting treatment. Of two
thirds of the women who had menstruation problems 77% experienced an appreciable
improvement, with the majority totally getting rid of the problems. Three quarters of all the
women reported improvements in other ailments such as: muscle tensions, psychic
imbalances, indigestion, poor circulation and general imbalance."

A separate study published a table demonstrating results.  I encourage you to look at the table found on pages pages 10-11 of this study. You will find the age of the patient, reason for infertility, number of years spent trying to conceive, previous treatments attempted, as well as how many reflexology sessions were administered before resulting in pregnancy.

Key reflexes to be stimulated during a fertility reflexology session are:

  • Pituitary- master gland- helps regulate cycle
  • Hypothalamus- regulates pituitary hormone production
  • Thyroid- over/under active thyroid can impact fertility
  • Solar Plexus- to relieve stress and tension
  • Ovary/Testicles- improve hormone function
  • Fallopian tubes/Gonads- release any blockages
  • Uterus/Prostate- improve circulation and promote normal function

Reflexology can be done in conjunction with other fertility treatments to help lessen negative side effects while normalizing body functions and encouraging fertility.

If you are categorized as "unexplained infertility," you may want to consider treatments for both you and your partner.

If you feel reflexology would be a good option for you, please email me at SereneSolereflexology@gmail.com to set up an appointment.  For those of you outside of Leavenworth, please do your homework to find a qualified reflexologist in your area.  If you are unsure of what to look for, please read this post on the difference between Spa Reflexology and Clinical Reflexology.

Best of luck to you. I pray you will be led toward the option that will be most beneficial for you and your situation.

What is reflexology?

Many have false ideas about what reflexology actually is.  There is nothing magic or mystical about it.  Through extensive study, reflex points found in the feet have been mapped out and found to mirror the organs, glands, and bones of the body.  When calcium or uric acid builds up on the nerve endings found in the feet, it can congest nerve pathways, decrease the function of the corresponding organ, and lead to compromised health.  My job is to locate crystal build-up on various reflex points and break it down so it can be effectively flushed from the body.  Once the crystals are removed the body is better able to achieve homeostasis and heal itself.

Think of it this way.  Have you ever used a shower head that was encrusted with calcium deposits?  How did the water flow?  Some holes probably shot water intermittently or in the wrong direction all together while others were probably blocked off completely, not allowing any water to pass through.  The shower head is unable to work to it's full potential until it is scrubbed clean.  And so it is with nerve endings and reflexology.  As I “scrub” your nerve endings clean, allowing proper function to be restored, your body is better able to reach its full potential in all body functions.  This shower analogy also demonstrates why reflexology is suggested for health maintenance as well as healing.  It is significantly easier to keep your shower head clean, so to speak, than to scrub off years of excessive build up!

Reflexology aids in stress relief, improves circulation, and improves overall nerve function.  Many have found great success in treating sinus congestion, multiple sclerosis, insomnia, PMS, migraines, sciatic pain, fibromyalgia and countless other conditions.   Come on in and try it out!  You just might discover a safe and affordable way to improve, as well as maintain, your health.

To better understand the difference between Spa Reflexology and Clinical Reflexology, read my post HERE.

What To Expect & How Often Should I Go In?

When you come in for your first session you will remain fully clothed and be asked to remove your shoes and socks only.  You will be provided with a wipe to clean off your own feet before your treatment. *Please cover any sores at home with band aids before you come in.*  You will sit in a reclining chair while I work on your feet.  Both feet will be touched as well as your legs up to your knees. You will be asked to give a brief health history so your session can be catered to your individual needs. The more you communicate with me before and during your session the more beneficial it will be for you.  Let me know if the pressure being applied to your feet is too light, too hard, or if you experience any discomfort or other sensations (tingling, warmth etc) during your session. These sensations may be experienced any place on the body during our session.  All of these sensations are normal, but communicating them allows me to know what areas require a little extra attention.  As stated in previous posts, reflexology clears away calcium deposits and uric and amino acids from your nerve endings, opening nerve pathways, improving circulation, and helping the body get to a point where it can better heal itself.  No oils or lotions will be applied to your feet during your session as this makes it more difficult to manipulate the build up on your nerve endings, however essential oils will be placed on the feet at the conclusion of your session to aid in the healing process.  (To read about the difference between reflexology and massage, read my post located HERE.)

Many ask how frequent sessions should be.  This is completely up to the individual, though keep in mind that the most significant results are generally seen after 3-5 sessions. If you are in good health you might want to come in for a regular "tune up" on an as needed basis to maintain health.  If you have a chronic condition (digestive issues, fibromyalgia, MS,  restless leg syndrome, PMS etc.) you might want to consider more frequent visits, as often as twice a week,  until you have achieved your desired level of health. The beauty of reflexology is maintenance can be performed by a loved one in the comfort of your own home to decrease the frequency, and subsequent cost, of a professional reflexology treatment.  If this is something that interests you, please let me know so I can keep you informed on upcoming workshops.  If requested, I can also mark problem areas on your foot with a pen so your loved one will know better what areas to work at home. Keep in mind that acute symptoms are resolved faster than chronic ones. (For a brief video on home maintenance, click HERE. )

While there are countless benefits from reflexology(read testimonial here), a few of my clients, maybe 5%, experience what is called a "healing crisis" as toxins are flushed from their system. I encourage all my clients to read my post on healing crisis' found Here.

I want you to get better.  I will not pressure you into coming in more often than your schedule or budget allows.  Come on in and we'll come up with a plan to suit your needs.

Testimonials from my clients

"You've made such a difference in the way I feel." ~M, Leavenworth KS

"I went in for a foot massage, and it felt great while they were doing it, but I didn't find any relief afterward. When I leave our sessions I find relief."

"Thanks for the reflexology session this weekend. I had hoped for some relief from my neck pain (mission accomplished), but had the happy surprise of relief from sinus pressure and congestion, too! Thanks for everything!" ~A.H., Leavenworth KS

"You probably hear this all the time, but I feel so much better!  I can't pinpoint what the difference is exactly, I just feel better overall.  More balanced.  Especially emotionally."

"I slept through the night without any (sleeping) medication for the first time in I don't know how long! Thank you, MaryAnn!" ~Julie

"I have found significant relief for my restless leg syndrome."

"I started out as a skeptic, as I'm sure most people do. MaryAnn was so good at explaining reflexology in layman's terms and making sure I was comfortable. She is very good at reminding you to communicate your needs throughout the session. It would be easy for her to quietly complete a generic reflexology session, but she is always sure to address your personal needs, and concentrates on those areas that need extra attention. Her goal is to help you feel better! I walked in with back and neck pain, sinusitis and a mild case of carpal tunnel. A few hours after a session with MaryAnn I could already feel a difference. I had more energy, I wasn't as achy, and my hand didn't hurt at all! I will definitely be seeing MaryAnn again, and make reflexology a part of my wellness routine." ~Suzie, Leavenworth KS

"At first I was a little unsure about the practice of reflexology. I had never heard of it before but thought I would give it a try. After the first session, I started to notice my headaches lessen and my allergies lighten. After a few more sessions I noticed that I had more energy during the day and was able to focus better. MaryAnn is very gentle and patient. I will definitely come back again!"
 ~ Melanie. Leavenworth KS

"MaryAnn did an amazing job!! She made me feel relaxed and hit some great spots. I went in with a headache and within minutes it was gone!  Usually my headaches last for HOURS! I can't wait to see her again."
 ~Susi, Leavenworth KS

"After I felt different sensations in different areas, MaryAnn told me what body part it was targeting and it all made perfect sense based on whats been going on with me lately. Amazingly accurate! I definitely became a believer after my session. MaryAnn is also very easy to be around which is a huge plus when someone is touching you!" ~Faith, Leavenworth KS

"MaryAnn is genuinely concerned and cares about her clients. She takes all of our frustrations and struggles into consideration while working on us. She knew I had a job where I had to run around on my feet all night so she concentrated on making my feet feel less strained; she worked out some of the other kinks in my other pressure points. She made sure that before I left I felt better and gave me specific instructions on how to help find relief in the future. I would recommend MaryAnn to everyone! " ~Brandi, Leavenworth KS

After my first reflexology session, I had a visible reduction in swelling and a the pain was manageable without medication.

"[My Husband] said that it's amazing what a difference he felt after his appointment with you and that his neck has not hurt since!! (You saved us a big hospital bill as he had an appointment to get occipital nerve blockage) that he is no longer getting, thanks to you!!! " ~Nery, Leavenworth KS

"This is the first time I haven't gone PAST my due date. I'm sure it's because of reflexology!  Thank you!" S.S. Leavenworth KS

Healing Crisis

When build up on nerve endings is broken down through reflexology it shatters into the surrounding area where it is absorbed by the surrounding tissue and ultimately flushed out of the body.  As a result of this freeing of toxins, many clients of reflexology experience what is known as a "healing crisis." For many this means temporary cold or flu symptoms, lasting 1-3 days.  This is one of the ways your body relieves itself of toxins and as such, these symptoms should not be suppressed.

Other patients of reflexology may experience a temporary worsening of symptoms or temporary presence of old symptoms.  Neck pain from an accident years ago, for example.  All of these reactions are normal and should be short lived. Many people get discouraged when they experience a healing crisis, thinking they are worse off than before their session. Do not be discouraged if you have these symptoms.  It simply means it is working!  Your body is rebooting and getting back on track. It is remembering when and where the problem occurred while retracing and renewing nerve pathways.

The frequency & symptoms of a healing crisis should decrease as you continue your reflexology sessions.  If your symptoms feel severe you should talk to your Reflexologist about possibly having shorter but more frequent visits to lessen the effects.  Many have found the process of a healing crisis and it's symptoms can be sped up through a juice fast.  Please talk with your doctor before starting a juice fast or any other cleansing.  Drinking eight 8 ounce glasses of water a day can also be helpful in removing toxins.

Still others will experience an emotional, rather than a physical,  healing crisis.  This often results in a cathartic cry during a session.  Do not be embarrassed, but let your emotions run their course.  This emotional cleansing can be very therapeutic, especially to those who have experienced an emotional trauma.

A friend of mine shared her experience:

"Both of my kids have been struggling so badly with both parents remarrying and various issues this year and one session with her and my son was sobbing, but it was a good sob. He was working through everything and now he tells me, 'I was having a hard time being happy but since she rubbed my feet it's just easier to be happy now mom!' Love it."

After the toxins and emotional blockage have been flushed from the body your body is better able to achieve homeostasis and heal itself.  Physically, mentally, and emotionally.

Spa Reflexology vs Clinical Reflexology

As discussed earlier, there is a lot of confusion as to what reflexology is.  I have worked on several clients who claim to have experienced reflexology before.  Most of them, within the first minute of our session, say, "I don't know what I had done before, but it sure wasn't this!"

There are two types of reflexology.  The first is the type generally given in spas. The second is Clinical, or Medical, Reflexology.

Spa type Reflexology is like an improved foot massage.  It generally uses oils and creams with some pressure applied here and there.  Its main purpose is to awaken the pleasure sensors in the skin.  Though very relaxing, this type of  Reflexology has little in common with Medical Reflexology.

Medical or Clinical Reflexology uses specific hand and finger techniques with deep pressure to stimulate all nerve endings contained in the foot. This type of Reflexology awakens pressure sensors in the feet and can cause some discomfort on congested nerve endings. Discomfort on specific reflex areas will only last as long as pressure is applied. As the condition improves, so will the discomfort on the nerve ending. A skilled Reflexologist will adjust pressure to the tolerance level of the patient and coach them on breathing techniques that can increase endorphins to help relieve pain.

How can you know you are getting the real deal? Ask for credentials.  Many states do not require certification for Reflexologists, so basically someone could start charging for services after glancing at a foot chart.  (To see the requirements for your state click Here) Ask to see certification.  Look for the letters  "C.R." (Certified Reflexologist) following their name. This certification is a very good indicator as to the extent of their knowledge on the subject as well as experience in the field.  Ask questions before and during your session.  If your "Reflexologist" stumbles on answers, cannot tell you what reflex point they are currently working, or if they attempt to diagnose you with a condition, you will want to look elsewhere. **Diagnosing done by anyone but your health care provider is considered practicing medicine without a license. Reflexologists are certified only to state the condition of your reflex points. If you are concerned you may have a problem with your corresponding organ, please see your health care provider.**

Call ahead to ask if reflexology is painful or not.  If the reply is "Not at all!  It's very relaxing!" then you can plan to get a fabulous foot massage rather than a Clinical Reflexology treatment. A foot rub is relaxing, but reflexology does so much more.  The answer you are looking for is something similar to "While most of the session will be comfortable, there may be brief moments of discomfort.  I will communicate with you to make sure the discomfort stays at a tolerable level and all discomfort should disappear as soon as I remove my hands." This answer indicates you have found a knowledgeable and well trained Reflexologist.

One other "red flag" when it comes to reflexology is the use of oils or lotions. Lubrication on the skin makes it very difficult to effectively manipulate nerve endings and break up congestion.  Use of oils and lotions is NOT within the scope of reflexology and is better associated with a massage.  Though some reflexologists may chose to end a session with therapeutic massage oils,  oil should not be used during the actual reflexology session.

Do your homework.  Especially when it comes to your health. Your body will thank you.

Carpal Tunnel?

Today I worked on a friend who is in the beginning stages of carpal tunnel and is a new nursing mother.  Any idea what areas were most tender on her?  You guessed it! Her wrist, breast, and back reflexes! (All you nursing mothers out there will understand that!)  She loves to crochet and makes such amazing and detailed creations. During our session her biggest concern was her wrist. We worked her whole foot focusing on her neck, shoulder, arm, and wrist reflexes as well as her adrenal gland to decrease swelling, her solar plexus reflex to relax, and all spinal reflexes.  Shortly after our session she sent me a quick facebook message:

"My wrist feels SO much better! Amazing! Thank you, MaryAnn!!"

Glad you are feeling better.  Hopefully you'll be crocheting your amazing creations again soon! :)

***Please note that acute symptoms are quicker to treat than chronic ones. Individual results may vary.***

For those of you at home suffering from carpal tunnel, you may find relief doing hand reflexology on yourself.

Because carpal tunnel is caused by having your hands constantly curved forward, you my find relief by doing the following exercise with a rubber band to strengthen the muscles on the back of the hand. Many have claimed to be cured of their carpal tunnel by simply balancing the strength on both the palmar and dorsal aspect of the hand.  Just a few minutes each hour (or as needed) can get you back on the road to recovery.

Article from the Dr. Oz website on Reflexology

Here is a fantastic article on how reflexology works as well as helpful tips to help you work on yourself at home in between professional sessions.  Reflexology 101 Article  HERE.

And for those of you too lazy to read the article, here's the highlights:

*" Is there any evidence, or scientific studies that support the effectiveness of reflexology?
In 1991, the first U.S. reflexology study published in a scientific peer reviewed medical journal, Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, studied the effects of reflexology on PMS. The double blind study showed a 47% reduction in symptoms, not including placebo effect."(reflexology compared to a general foot rub- it pays to go to a trained professional!)

*"I recommend trying more than one session, because reflexology has cumulative benefits. It’s important the client assesses if this is working for them or not. Depending on the issue or health challenge, I often suggest at least three sessions close together (every week or two weeks) and then we evaluate initial results. Remember, acute conditions tend to balance faster than chronic ones. In other words, the longer you’ve had the issue, the longer it takes to get rid of it."

The author also shared tips for working on your own hand reflexes in between sessions to help with:
Insomnia
Digestion
Cold & Flu
Back Pain
Low Libido

"I often tell my clients that they can do all of these techniques as a general tune-up between sessions as a way to prolong the effects of their session or to see faster results. Many clients report feeling energized and relaxed with all of these techniques. It’s a quick and easy way to interrupt stress."

Reflexology for Menstral Pain & Symptoms

Women's health and reflexology is one area that has been extensively studied.  Whether you are wanting help with PMS, infertility, morning sickness or other pregnancy related ailments, menopause, increased milk supply or low libido, reflexology can help.  One study recorded an amazing 47% decrease in menstrual symptoms through reflexology.  In my practice ALL of my female clients have reported noticeable improvement in symptoms, some even after the first session.  My clients are always surprised that I can tell if they are ovulating or menstruating by different sensitivities in their feet. Not only can reflexology help to reduce PMS symptoms, but it is also a very gentle and effective way to help mother nature when it comes to the rhythm and regularity of your cycle.  I have had more than one client start their period either during, or just following, a session.  It gives the body the "nudge" it needs to do what it is already prepared to do.

Though regular professional treatments are encouraged, there are some things you can do at home to help ease symptoms:

When it's that time of the month and all you want to do is curl up in the fetal position and rest, go ahead and do that.  Now you are in the perfect position to stimulate your own reproductive reflexes.  The easiest way to do this is to reach around the back of your foot, grabbing the back of your ankle with your thumb and first knuckle.  Apply light pressure and take several deep breathes for a minute or two.

If you are still uncomfortable and want to do more, try doing a thumb or finger walk.  Give special attention to the sides of the heel (medial and lateral aspect of each foot) just below the ankle bone. This is where the ovarian and uterine reflexes can be found. You will notice a perfect fit for your thumb just under the ankle bone.  Apply constant pressure, rubbing in a circle if desired. Work all around the ankle bone and back of the foot, including the heel, to work the sciatic,  hip, pelvic and lower back reflexes.  These reflexes can be especially tender during menstruation or ovulation.  Do not push hard enough to inflict pain, just hard enough to notice pressure and maybe a slight discomfort.

A finger walk across the top of the foot, from ankle bone to ankle bone, will work the fallopian tubes.  To do a finger walk, pretend your first and second fingers are a caterpillar slowly crawling across the area.  Try to keep the pressure constant and "walk" across the top of the foot.

Rubbing the pad and neck of the large toe will stimulate the pituitary, pineal,  thyroid, & parathyroid reflexes aiding in hormone regulation.  This can also help ease mood swings and irritability as well as help relieve hormone related headaches.

Certain essential oils on the reproductive reflex points, abdomen, or lower back may prove helpful as well.  Many have found relief using lavender or rosemary oil.  Butterfly Express has a blend called Women Wise that is fantastic for cramps.  Some reported having better success with this oil blend than over the counter medications such as Midol. Simply add 2-6 drops of essential oil to a nickel size amount of carrier oil (I prefer coconut or almond oil) and massage on the abdomen, back, or onto the reproductive reflexes.  You may also want to add 2-5 drops to a warm bath.  Please study proper usage of oils to determine the amount and frequency of use that would be best for you.  Some find relief by applying oils once every hour for relief, though many find that symptoms are relieved 20 min or so after the first application.

Most importantly, remember that stress can exacerbate any pain/discomfort/symptom.  Find some time for yourself.  Take a hot bath.  Meditate. Read a book.  Treat yourself to a foot bath.  A few minutes of pampering goes a long way.  Listen to your body.  Month my month your symptoms should decrease.

Though it can be difficult to treat yourself to a full reflexology session, here are a few additional tips you can try at home.  You may want to consider asking a friend or loved one to help.

Reflexology & The Waitress

I have been working on a waitress friend of mine.  After work her feet hurt so badly she can hardly walk.  She gets a pins and needles sensation that climbs her legs and effects her ability to care for her family as well as her general attitude and well being. After just one session she happily told me, "My feet don't hurt!  And they didn't bother me for a full 72 hours after our session, even after working all night!"  How wonderful to see results after just one session!
